Trapping of magnetic flux by the plunge region of a black hole accretion disk

چکیده
The existence of the radius of marginal stability means that accretion flows around black holes invariably undergo a transition from a MHD turbulent disklike flow to an inward plunging flow. We argue that the plunging inflow can greatly enhance the trapping of large scale magnetic field on the black hole, and therefore may increase the importance of the Blandford-Znajek (BZ) effect relative to previous estimates that ignore the plunge region. We support this hypothesis by constructing and analyzing a toy-model of the dragging and trapping of a large scale field by a black hole disk, revealing a strong dependence of this effect on the effective magnetic Prandtl number of the MHD turbulent disk. Furthermore, we show that the enhancement of the BZ effect depends on the geometric thickness of the accretion disk. This may be, at least in part, the physical underpinnings of the empirical relation between the inferred geometric thickness of a black hole disk and the presence of a radio jet. متن کاملAccretion Disk Torqued by a Black Hole
If a Kerr black hole is connected to a disk rotating around it by a magnetic field, the rotational energy of the Kerr black hole provides an energy source for the radiation of the disk in addition to disk accretion. The black hole exerts a torque on the disk, which transfers energy and angular momentum between the black hole and the disk. If the black hole rotates faster than the disk, energy a...
متن کاملEffects of Magnetic Fields on the Diskoseismic Modes of Accreting Black Holes
The origin of the rapid quasi-periodic variabilities observed in a number of accreting black hole X-ray binaries is not understood. It has been suggested that these variabilities are associated with diskoseismic oscillation modes of the black hole accretion disk. In particular, in a disk with no magnetic field, the so-called g-modes (inertial oscillations) can be self-trapped at the inner regio...
متن کاملMagnetically Driven Accretion Flows in the Kerr Metric I: Models and Overall Structure
This is the first in a series of papers that investigate the properties of accretion flows in the Kerr metric through three-dimensional, general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations of tori with a near-Keplerian initial angular velocity profile. We study four models with increasing black hole spin, from a/M = 0 to 0.998, for which the structural parameters of the initial tori are mainta...
متن کاملMagnetic flux captured by an accretion disk
We suggest a possible mechanism of efficient transport of the large-scale external magnetic flux inward through a turbulent accretion disk. The outward drift by turbulent diffusion which limits the effectiveness of this process is reduced if the external flux passes through the disk in concentrated patches. Angular momentum loss by a magnetocentrifugal wind from these patches of strong field ad...
